Your home is your sanctuary. It’s the place you come home to everyday after work. It’s the last thing you see before you fall asleep, and the first thing you see when you awake. Considering how much of our lives are spent at home, it’s important to have an environment that we enjoy; comfortable, practical, and aesthetically pleasing. Unfortunately interior design isn’t always cheap. Here are five ways you can save money doing it

1. Rejuvenate With New Colors of Paint

You can swing by Home Depot (or any hardware store) and pick up a gallon of paint for under twenty dollars, so there’s really no excuse not to paint. This is especially true for smaller spaces, like apartments. It won’t cost you much to paint them, so why not give it whirl? Transform your dull, standard white walls, to a warm “Shitake Mushroom” or cool “Nantucket Fog” and the difference will astound you!

2. Buy From Costco and Sam’s Club

Many people forget that the warehouse clubs also sell a number of interior design products. For example, Sams Club sells housewares, furniture, and even live plants! If you pay for it with your Sams Club Discover credit card, you’ll save even more with the cash back rewards.

3. Check Estate Auctions

One of the cheapest places to snatch up affordable furniture and decorative items are at local estate auctions. First of all, the quality is generally way better than what you can buy new, since the items for sale are usually decades old. Secondly, the prices are usually way lower than anywhere else. This is especially true for the ones that take place in rural areas.

4. Cash Out Your Credit Card Rewards

Perhaps you have some cash back or rewards accumulated on your card… why not cash them out? For example, Discover credit cards (like the Discover Open Road) will let you redeem your rewards for gift cards. To sweeten the pot, they will even give you up to double the amount when you opt for gift cards instead of cash. But regardless of your card issuer, why not cash out those points for a Sams Club or Home Depot gift card you can use to pay for your new design?

5. Ask Friends & Relatives For Old Items

As the old saying goes, one man’s junk is another’s treasure. This is especially true when it comes to interior design. Many people have loads of great stuff stashed away in their basement, simply because it doesn’t match their current style. Or they may not be using it because there is a blemish (i.e. a table that needs new varnish). Check with your friends, family, and neighbors to see if they have anything you might be interested in. They will probably give it to you for free, for trade, or at a very reasonable price.

A Look At A Few Popular Decorating Styles Popular decorating styles are always changing. Is your home up to date on the latest fashion trends and decorating tips?

Popular decorating styles are fun, interesting and they just add something to talk about to the rest of the home. If you are considering a redo of your living room, your kitchen, your bedroom or virtually any other room in or outside of your home, consider some of today’s more popular choices. You are sure to find one, or two, that you really love to use.

Traditional: We have to start with the traditional look because it just does not go out of style. Here, the look is furniture that comes from the Kings and Queens of yesteryear, early American trends and a wide range of other formal styled items. You are looking for traditional to come through in the upholstery, in the window treatments and even in the accents that are placed around the room. Traditional is a style that is highly expensive to pull off with exceptional quality furnishings.

Shabby Elegance: Who’s to say that this is not one of the best methods of decorating. The look is that of chic, something that features light toned wall and furniture colorings, old china pattern looks, warm yet comfortable pieces that create a sense of relaxation when you look at them.

Contemporary: Modern contemporary looks have always been in style in the last decade. These looks are influenced by pieces that are bold and bright, different and unique and are functional yet are also more of a piece of art as well. You will find straight, clean lines in the furnishings and walls here.

Art Deco: This popular decorating style is one that seems quite a bit like the modern contemporary yet it has a more flowing look to it. The lines are not as straight, but rather are curved.

Rustic: The look for the log cabin is not gone. In a rustic Southwestern feel, you will have woods used of various types. It will have a laid back feel with warm throws and soft, comfortable furniture. The color scheme here is that of warm, rich colors that complement the woods.

French Country: This is a very popular choice in decorating styles. Here, you will have many bright colors and will have that feel of whimsical dreaming. Wood finishes are done with fruitwoods and cherry. Art work with color is on the walls.

One of these popular decorating styles will work perfectly in your home. There are plenty to select from to help you to transform the look for your home into something that is amazing.

Whether you are working with existing furnishings and fabrics or “starting from scratch” with an empty room, you should always use the elements and principles of design as a guide in choosing everything. The elements are your tools or raw materials, much like paints are the basics to a painter. The elements of design include space, line, form, color, and texture. The principles of design relate to how you use these elements and are balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion and scale, and harmony and unity.

Element #1: Space
Space defines the boundaries and sets the limits on the functional and decorative things you can do. Usually you will not determine the space; instead, you will be faced with the challenge of using the existing space effectively.

Element #2: Line
The lines in a room are second only to color in importance when it comes to setting the overall mood or feeling of a room. The lines of window fashions should support the dominant line of the room. In most situations, the dominant line is straight (vertical, horizontal or diagonal) rather than curved. Your choice of emphasizing the direction of lines will determine the mood you want to create.
• Vertical lines add height and dignity, creating a more formal atmosphere. Vertical lines also balance the horizontal lines found in most furniture.
• Horizontal lines tend to create a restful, informal feeling. They work well in casual rooms or as relief to the strong verticals of formal rooms.
• Diagonal lines attract attention and lead the eye. They can be disturbing unless supported by verticals or opposing diagonals.
• Curved lines add a softening effect and keep the room from becoming too stiff. Use curved lines with some restraint to keep the room from becoming too soft and overly feminine.

Element #3: Form
Lines that join together produce the form, or shape, of an object, which in turn impacts the overall feeling of a room. Straight lines create rectangles, square and triangles. Curved lines form circles and ovals. The rectangle is the most popular form and is often the dominant shape in a room. Triangles provide stability and curved shapes soften the contours of objects.

Element #4: Color
More than any other element, color can make a room beautiful. Color can set the mood. It can make a room warmer or cooler, larger or smaller. It can hide unsightly features or call attention to the center of interest. Even with the simplest furnishings, the proper use of color can transform a room.

Element #5: Texture
Texture is playing an increasingly important role in home decorating. Visual texture is a material’s apparent smoothness or roughness. To maintain and enhance a casual feeling, use fabrics that are more heavily textured, nubby or rough visual texture. Smooth, shiny surfaces such as silk, moiré, chintz and silk-like looks support a more formal feeling in a room. Using several levels of complementary textures adds variety and maintains interest. However, it is a good idea to avoid dramatic contrasts in texture.

Nowadays, the lack of time for decorating and its maintenance makes people look for something that can be done quickly and practically. However, even in this kind of situation personality is indispensable. The choice of material, furniture, accessories and right colors are great allies for those who want to make the interior environment more elegant and reflecting “the owner’s way of being.”

Colors are fashion. This has become a key element of decoration.

Harmony and quality

The main concept in a design project for a house or apartment can be defined in just one word: harmony. Harmony among styles and elements that will be used, such as color, fabrics, fabric textures and right lighting – can increase the perceived value of your design project or, if used incorrectly, can ruin it completely.

For example, you can set a modern architecture concept of interior design and mix the environments that you have with some classic pieces; or you can set a classic architecture concept of interior design and mix the environments with some contemporary elements. However, it is necessary to be careful.

For those who cannot hire a professional designer, it is very important that he or she knows how to get good quality design. The key is to avoid the use of too many colorful elements and strong colors. “Using only one color tone in the environment it will be almost impossible to make it wrong,” according to many interior designers.

But what is the meaning of matching in an interior design project?
Interior design is like fashion: everything can be used according to the taste of each person. There are not too many rules. The first principle is to start from the architecture style of the house, after which the interior design can be defined.

For instance, it is worthless to have a very contemporary house and use many classic elements inside its environments. You have to follow the style of the house. However, to have one or another older piece in a modern residence brings a different and beautiful combination to the decoration.

The wall

It doesn’t matter if it is a painting, picture, sculpture or a poster with your preferred superhero. When disguising the wall, everything can do good or bad, depending on the dose, the distribution, the lighting and the position.

The walls of residences of people with more contemporary style receive, more and more giclees from pop art. Icons of this movement, including Americans Andy Warhol (1928-1987) and Roy Liechtenstein (1923-1997), inspire copies and their masterpieces have been reproduced on a large scale. With colorful draws, the ideal would be to hang them on more bright walls.

As a first commandment, the experts say that the masterpiece should mean something for the owner.

Big pictures need to be alone in the wall. Two or more of medium size can be hung side by side. And many small pictures, making geometric figures, are very welcome.
